Live Mealworms
Feeding live mealworms (Tenebrio Molitor) and our new Superworm, as a special treat to attract bluebirds, songbirds, and many other species of wild birds has become a very popular addition to seed feeders at bird feeding stations.
If you haven’t used mealworms before, they are larvae of a beetle with high a protein level. Because their diet consists of fresh cereal and vegetable, they are extremely palatable to birds and a safe food source.
Many birders believe the mealworms are used solely for attracting bluebirds. This is definitely not the case as many other species enjoy these little treats. Several species have been know to feast on mealworms including some of the following:
Robins, Bluebirds, Blue Jays, Sparrows, Finches, Cardinals, Woodpeckers, Nuthatches, Titmice, Wrens, Chickadees, and even Purple Martins.
Mealworms can be offered from just about any feeder. Most birds will eat them right from a dish on the ground. Live mealworms will keep for several weeks with proper storage. Instructions are included with every order.
Many non-seed-eating songbirds are declining in number because of the loss of breeding habitats and lack of food. Making food readily available is vital to ensure their survival. Bluebirds are an excellent example of how a species has been re-established in areas from which they had disappeared. Enthusiasts have been quite successful in attracting bluebirds to nest box trails, as well as backyards, by feeding our mealworms.
